I wanted to tell you about the Musicians' Village that is starting to take shape in New Orleans. The finished village will consist of 76 homes and have a venue for music education and performance. It is the inspiration of Harry Connick Jr. and Bradford Marsalis. It is such a noble cause and will be an inspiration in the rebuilding of New Orleans.
I just hope that New Orleans is also remembering that there were alot of other types of artists that had to leave or had their livelihood destroyed. I remember reading about a dance school and its owner that would never exist again in that area. Also I know of some theatre people that were based in New Orleans and had all their possesions ruined. They had to leave their home and could not afford to return. Luckily for that couple, an outpouring of theatre support made it possible for them to continue working in other areas of the country.
The point, is to remember that to make a community it involves lots of different types of artists that might not be able to afford to rebuild their business, performing, dancing, acting, writing, whatever they did. Alot of attention goes to one area, which is good, but it takes alot more to make a community whole again in the arts.
I hope that one day New Orleans will be a WHOLE Community again.
